So I noticed that we've had a little bit of an AVENGERS EXPLOSION lately, and I thought it might be helpful to have a check-in about where in canon everyone's coming from and what general feelings are! I've talked to several of y'all separately, but honestly there are so many characters now in or about to be apped from the recent Marvel movies that I can't quite keep everybody straight.

HELLO, I am Lexie ([profile] sotto_voice) and I play Tony. He and Pepper are currently in from a few months before the first Iron Man movie. For the moment, at least until he's publicly Iron Man (and I'll reevaluate once that point is hit!), I'd prefer to keep him separate from other Avengers and Avenger-affiliated folks; anyone who's going to have an idea of who he is and what goes on. ALL BETS ARE OFF after that, though, and I'm beyond stoked about playing with y'all! Come chat in the comments?? #superorganizedandshit

I'm Kate ([personal profile] ceitfianna) and I play Charles Xavier from X-Men: First Class and he's currently in the early part of his canon. In terms of X-Men, he's a movieverse with hints but one thing I'm wondering about is how do we as movieverse want to think about any sort of shared universe if at all.

I personally love the idea of the X-Men kind of around if not interacting so that Charles knows Starks but as he's earlier in time Howard or knows of Captain America.

This hasn't really come up too much in threads but I'd love to get thoughts on this as we do have this post. Thank you.

My personal immediate thought (and bearing in mind that I haven't actually seen XMFC or any of the X-Men movies since the first one) is that the two canons probably aren't linked; it seems like you'd hear a whole lot more about mutants and such in the recent string of Marvel movies, if they were? My canon knowledge is deeply shaky, though, and I'm interested to hear what other folks think!

The reason they're not linked is because the rights for The Avengers vs X-Men vs Spider-Man are all owned by different people. So having X-Men stuff in Avengers' movie stuff isn't actually possible.

This is why I'm asking in here if in Milliways' space anyone is interested in having that knowledge that's part of the comicsverse. I'm good either way but it'd be good to be on the same page and also more thoughts the better.

I kind of like the idea of the mutants being like urban legends that SHIELD has files for but no definite proof of since they've been busy with aliens, flying suits of armor and gods.

But this guy isn't official yet so...

Oh, yeah, I know that they're actually not linked because of real-world rights stuff! I meant more -- the stuff that happens in the X-Men films is a pretty huge deal, in terms of world events that seem like they'd have to go noticed and remarked upon if we said the universes were linked and thus that they'd happened in the Avengers movie-'verse. Everyone should defs weigh in!

Yeah, its complicated and sort of annoying and the more thoughts and ideas the better. Since Marvel never really has small events.

Its been a long day and I was worried I wasn't making a lot of sense.

haha, I don't think the phrase 'small event' is in Marvel's vocabulary. Total sense, ma'am!

Perhaps the stuff in the first three X-men movies hasn't happened yet or maybe they won't happen since First Class seems a sort of reboot to me.

But I do see your point and further difficulties as when the events happen, why wasn't SHIELD and the Avengers there? Especially in SF during X3.

Yeah, I would agree with this -- maybe mutants exist in the Marvel movieverse, sure, I am totally good with some level of that! But both the events of the X-Men films and the events of the Avengers films seem like things that would be... noticed in the other films, you know? And they don't seem to be. (Plus there's the thorny question of which X-Men films to include, given that First Class is kind of an ambiguous reboot, right?) So I would vote for them to be slightly AU from each other, personally, I think.

In the comics, the X-Men and the Avengers have always existed in this weird sort of divided neighborhood, anyway, so far as I can tell. Like, in theory they're totally the same world, and they team up and help each other out and Wolverine is on every team ever, and stuff! But in practice, they join up for big crossover events, and then each group is sort of... mysteriously absent for the other's major stuff anyway. Even when they could help out, and there's no IC reason why they wouldn't, a lot of time they're just kind of not there, presumably for the simple reason that that many characters and groups get awfully unwieldy to keep in continuity all the time.

What is this "continuity" of which you speak, brother?

Also the Avengers are jerks.

Comic canon tells me so.

And comics canon is never inconsistent or arbitrary. NEVER.
